Naturalization requirements
The first item you require in order to become naturalized through a citizenship application is a green card. A green card establishes you as a permanent resident of the United States. Next, you must meet the necessary requirements that include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have resided in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years or three if you are married to a U.S. citizen
- Have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the last five years or one-half of your three years if you are married to a citizen
- Have lived for at least three months in the state or district where you are filing your application
- Have not made your primary home in another country
- Be a person of good moral character
- Be able to read, write, and speak English
- Successfully pass a test on U.S. history and government
- Swear belief in the principles of the United States Constitution and loyalty to the United States
The application process
To apply for citizenship, you must complete a citizenship application and send it to the local USCIS office, along with the following:
- A copy of your green card
- Required photos
- Processing fees
After you have sent in your application, you may need to wait several months until you are informed that it is time to visit the local USCIS office to be fingerprinted and schedule your interview.
At this interview, a USCIS officer administers a test of your language skills and knowledge of U.S. history. After passing this test, you receive an appointment for swearing in as an official U.S. citizen.
