Can a misdemeanor conviction get me deported?

Yes, some misdemeanors and most felonies can result in deportation and a permanent ban from the United States.  Something as minor as a shoplifting charge can result in even a green card-holder's deportation.

It seems like I just have to file some forms online.  Do I really need an immigration lawyer?

Yes.  Forms can be complicated.  If you do not supply the proper information for even one question, your visa or citizenship application may be postponed or denied.  If you rely on online forms to handle your immigration case, be aware that—

  • You cannot ask a form questions about your case
  • A form will not show up in court on your behalf
  • Forms cannot anticipate problems or explain your options if problems arise

Hiring a skilled Atlanta immigration lawyer from the beginning saves precious time and relieves unnecessary stress.

How do I hire an immigration attorney?

1. Make sure they are attorneys.

This sounds obvious, but unfortunately, there are people who take advantage of immigrants.  Look to see if they are members of your state bar association to make sure the candidates are attorneys.  Only a lawyer understands the complexities of immigration law.  There is no room for mistakes when processing your immigration paperwork.

2. Only hire a lawyer who specializes in immigration law.

Immigration law is complicated and takes years of practice and study to perfect.  An attorney who only occasionally practices immigration law may not know the ins and outs of immigration court, or how to deal with immigration officers and consulate offices.  Just as you would want a specific doctor for a specific surgery—you want someone who knows exactly how to achieve your immigration goals.

3. Hire an attorney that you like and you feel is competent to handle your case.

Your immigration lawyer holds your and your family's future in their hands, and you should work as a team.  At The Hendrix Law Firm, we build relationships with our clients that last for years. We know our clients' names and care about their families.

4. If you are an immigrant with criminal charges, only hire a lawyer who specializes in assisting immigrants with criminal charges.

Recent immigration laws make immigrants—with even minor criminal charges and/or convictions—potentially deportable.  It is crucial that your immigration and criminal law attorney understand the potential immigration problems associated with criminal charges.

What can I expect when I contact your law firm?

First, when you contact our office, an attorney answers all questions about your case.  Then you, the client, make an appointment to talk to us.  Because some of our clients are in other countries, we also take phone appointments.

During your appointment, we explain the immigration process in depth.  We then provide you with a detailed outline of the strategy we will pursue to solve your immigration issues.
